Crime-Solving Camera

Brought to you by Jahan

A digital camera fitted with the right filters, like the one shown here, can detect only infrared light. The crime-fighting trick can reveal bloodstains hidden behind layers of paint.

It was very interesting to think that bye just adding lighting in a normal camera that you can solve crimes and find blood under manny layers of paint. There are a few flaws though; If it took the police days to uncover the blood from the paint, then maybe the blood will evaporate or dry on the surface. This article was pretty cool i give it a A-.

I think that that was very cool! I wonder if any of these crime committing people know about it because I'm sure they would not do anything bad anymore. Cameras can do lots of stuff, so I think that was a cool way to add something. It is nice to know that modern technology can go so far. The camera itself is pretty cool anyway. The way that the camera does it is also really cool. It is interesting to see the new ways that technology goes. So human eyes can't see infrared, but cameras can. That is very cool. I think that the way this scientist figured out all the stuff about the camera sensing the wavelengths and all the different stuff about the timing and how long they last was very cool. I wonder if people could've figured this out earlier, but I think that it is a very good idea that will help us in the future. It is also very cool to know that cameras can do some stuff that we can't do. A camera as a new top-notch crime-fighting weapon. Who would've known. That is very cool. Overall, I think that it is really cool. I rate this article A because it was very in-depth, described how the camera worked, and was a very cool idea.

I think that this article was really, really cool. I don't think that this should have revealed this to the public because now criminals know but I think this is really cool to know. I think that it is a major step towards stopping crime. It is unbelievable that forensic scientists have come up with a filter that filters infrared light, something that we humans can not see with the naked eye. It is unbelievable we have come this far. But, I am a little concerned that it did not see under two layers of acrilyc white paint. Even though it saw through six layers of black paint and six layers of red paint, if it is covered by white paint, which most of the time it is, then they immediately lose the trail once again and this invention goes completely to waste. They need to find a way so that it can see through those layers of white paint. If they do, this could be a major breakthrough in criminal science. I give this article, on a scale from 1-100 about an 83-85. Thank you :)

That was cool. To think that a camera could see through paint is incredibly awesome, because it's seeing things that even we can't. They might have to start selling them in stores to get cool pictures, because that would sell VERY well.

That is amazing! This could be a really useful modification to technology. If the scientists who created this camera can make it master finding blood under paint, it would be a lot easier to catch criminals. That would eventually lead to less crimes. I agree with Chris that they shouldn't have revealed this to the public, because criminals could find out. But in order for this camera to catch many crimes, it has to work really well, to the ability where it could detect blood under any paint. I definitely rate this article an A because it gave a lot of information about the camera.

This is really cool. We can solve a lot more crimes with this camera. It can show us evidence that we can't see with the naked eye. I agree, they should not have said anything in the public because the criminals can see this and then will find new ways to cover up their crimes and work around the camera. Overall I give this article an A-.

This is an amazing discovery! Now that we have a camera that does the work of hours of tests in seconds we can save time on forensics and all the work that goes into it and actually get to arresting the murderer or find the victim. The idea that a camera can see through layers of paint is astonishing, compared to all the dumb inventions that have been created recently that don't help the human society at all. But, as everyone above agrees (and I don't mean to create the chain of echoes from one good idea) it was NOT smart to post that on the internet where criminals can see it, if they would even look on a kids' science website. The people who created the article could've at least left out the part about the acrylic paint fooling the camera, because now everyone will know that that is the paint to use if you are covering up a crime scene. It would've been much safer to say that they simply found a paint that fooled the camera, but didn't go into detail on what it was. That was the only downpoint of the article, but the rest was truly amazing! I would definitely read more about the camera if another story pops up (especially if it's about the camera SOLVING a crime)!!! ;-)

This article was very interesting. It is kind of odd that only TWO layers of white paint could cover up the blood, and not SIX layers of anything other color of paint. However, this is a great invention. This can be very useful if people aren't sure about a crime, or who committed it. This would be pretty cool to use. I would love to test it!
I wonder if any other material would cover up the blood. If you put a large or small object on top of the blood, made of a certain material, would it show through? This was cool!

I also agree with Eva: they shouldn't have posted the part about the acrylic paint on the internet, because criminals can see that, hurt someone, paint white over every area, and get away with it! That would be terrible! Terrible!

I think that this article was really cool because this could change the lives of forensic scientists, police, and CSI. Cameras are very capable, and something like this was bound to come. I think that this could be a really good things because instead of peeling off layers of paint, where it is to no avail, they can find where the blood is so that they just scrape of that part. I think that this might stop some people from doing the bad deeds they do because they know that now, there is a bigger chance of getting caught. I think that it is interesting that it cannot see through two layers of white paint, but up to six for the black and red paints. I think that it is interesting that we cannot filter the infrared light, but this filter that attaches can. I believe it is because there is probably something that reflects off the filter, that then causes it to be able to see through certain paints. I am curious about the paint situation. Can it see through about six layers of red and black paint from certain companies? Or just the one they used to test this out? Maybe, if they used another company of paint, they could maybe even see through more layers of the white paint. I think that because white is a sheer color, paint companies are making them more thick so that it is not showing the color of the wall underneath. However, colors like black and red are more rich and thick, so they do not need more consistency. If they maybe made the white paint thinner, they could see through more. I also have a question. Why would they need this camera for looking through the layers of paint for blood? If there is a criminal killing someone, I dont think they would take the time to paint over the blood-covered walls. I think that this camera could be really affective if they use it in the right way. Overall, I think that this is a great invention, but they shouldn't have revealed it to the public yet because then the criminals will try to work around it, but it could be very useful.

Chloe is 100% correct when she said that it will definitely change forensics. This just proves how far we are getting in new technology. That will also make the villain think twice before committing a crime. (Even though it couldnt see through 2 layers of acrilyc white paint) But criminals can read this and use acrylic white paint. In all I thought this was a good article.

I think that was pretty interesting. It is great that just a lighting adjustment could help solve serious murders. It also says in the article that sometimes the evidence that is needed is to take down a wall of a house or something, but if they had this than no one would have to spend any money restoring a house. Like Adam said, there are obviously flaws, but with some adjusting this could really help society a lot.
