Bees Learn the Electric Buzz of Flowers

Brought to you by Faith

On the right-hand halves of flowers, a dusting of electrically charged particles (color in adjacent rectangle) reveals natural patterns. Bees can sense at least simple patterns in floral electrical charges, new research says.

Awesome! I never knew that flowers even HAD electric fields, and that bees could sense them. Also, I like how this kind of ties in potential energy from our robotics unit. Since there's a surge in energy, there is more kinetic energy. The bees can sense the kinetic energy, and then they know that they might want to come back later. I think that's awesome!

I wonder how the flowers make this electric field, and why. Does it help them somehow? Also, how do the bees choose which one? Why not just pick any random flower? In the event of a hurricane or some other natural disaster, what happens?

I think this is a really awesome article. Bees are very interesting creatures! I really want to know more about them and the electrical charges. A+ for this article. Thanks Faith!

That is so cool! Can any flying object detect those electric buzzes? I agree with Emilynne and am wondering the same thing; how do the flowers make this electric field? I thought this was really interesting! This was a great article. I also don't understand the "disk" idea. I'm confused, but overall it was interesting.
