Everybody has always been looking for different places to live. Like, NASA tried Mars and it didn't show results quite yet, but how interesting that the first aircraft to orbit Mercury finds two main materials for living. Ice is very very important because it's made out of water, and just out of luck they find an organic material too. That's so cool! It's so cool that the new technology ways to collect results are so high-tech, like this is the way that Messenger collected its samples. MESSENGER bounces laser beams and counts neutrons and gamma rays to collect information remotely about chemical elements on Mercury’s surface. It's really cool. Warmer parts of the shadowed craters contain black patches of organic material overlaying ice. It must be cool to see, too. While there is no direct evidence the dark patches are organic materials, scientists say it is the only explanation that fits all of the conditions. I've always heard all these rumors about life on Mars, but if this continues, then there truly is life on Mercury. This is a predicted reason to the organic materials:over time, a barrage of impacts could have turned the surface, bringing ice to greater depths and closer to the temperatures needed to turn to liquid. It's so interesting. Awesome!

First of all I think that this is amazing that Mercury has ice on it so there is a possibility of life o this planet. I have to say that Corey you have on of the longest comments ever. Okay getting back to Mercury, it is good that there is ice on this planet because this is an essential part of living because ice, is frozen water. It is good that there is a rover on Mercury so if there is life we will no that this planet would be a possibility for life. I also think that it is cool that NASA could find so much from just a sample of Mercury and some film from a rover. From Venice, Italy or Paris, France depending on what day you read this, goodby from Sophia.

This is amazing. We used to think that Earth was the only planet that was habitable, but now we think otherwise. Mercury holds a chance of having life, and mars does too. Ice is frozen water, and water is something that all living organisms need to survive. Unfortunately, Mercury is so hot and far away that no manned spacecraft would ever reach it, and we could never see the lifeforms with our own eyes. It is amazing how the water stays cool on the second hottest planet in our solar system. It is really cool how the water freezes because it is located inside of the craters of Mercury.

I do not believe that water in Mercury means anything. Plus, this whole comet or asteroid thing is only a theory. Plus, life on Mercury would be hard because it would be so hot. If any water was to be exposed to the surface, it might disintegrate into the air in minutes. Not a lot of cold, hard research can be put into this. Scientists will have to make theories all the time, because they cannot be on Mercury, they have to get all their info from pictures. Overall, I think there will not be life on Mercury for a long, long time.

This is so cool! I would have never thought that the planet furthest from the sun could have water ( ice is frozen water) and possibly life! Nicholas, you are just not making it fun for anyone else because you do not think it is real! It is big deal that MESSENGER, the first spacecraft to orbit Mercury could have possibly found life! I agree with Jahan because the scientists are not able to be on Mercury because it is the hottest planet. I do not think that we should completely forget about Mars; there is still a possibility of life. We should, however for the time being, focus on Mercury. If there is true proof, we should keep on looking to find the truth. Overall, I enjoyed this article very much. It said a lot about outer space research right this very moment.

P. S. Nicholas, did you click on full story? It gets you the entire story about Curiosity and MESSENGER really thouroughly.

P.S.S. Sorry about my spelling mistakes!

Great! I have been doubting that there was any life on Mars for a while, and I'm glad that NASA dropped Mars and began looking for life on Mercury. I think that it is really weird that there is ice on Mercury, considering that it is the planet closest to the sun. Oh well, I guess some craters are so big that they are able to hide ice from the sun.

Now this is a really weird theory that many people would disagree with, but maybe there are aliens on Mercury. I know that so far the only life found on Mercury is frozen water, but it was just a thought.

I agree with Nick a little bit about Mercury water not meaning much because it could just be Mars all over again, and that's nothing good.

I wonder if their could be life on mercury without an atmosphere. Their might be ice on mercury, but, even so, life has a very low chance of survival. I agree with nick about water not meaning much because it is on mars, but their might be more than just water under the ice.

I thought that this was really interesting. Still, just because their is ice/water does not mean that there is life on that planet. The reason being is because of the temperatures. A human could not live in -100 degree weather, even though that sounds impossible on other planets it is very possible. Even though NASA found something it doesn't prove the fact that aliens live on that planet or the we can live on this planet. Because even though water is a huge part of our survival you have to take into account everything else such as the temperature like I mentioned before. All in all I thought this artical was very interesting but still doesn't prove anything about any life form living on Mercury or the chance that a life form can live on Mercury.

I thought that this article is cool, but there are still questions to be answered. Do the polar caps ever face the sun, and if they do does the ice melt? I also wonder how MESSENGER controls the gama rays that are deadly to humans. Do they have any effect on a satellite? I want to know more about this. The last thing I want to say is, how were the craters formed, and are more still forming?

I think that it is surprising that they found ice and organic material in the craters of Mercury! These two components could lead to the finding of life on Mercury. Although, it could be almost impossible to find life since it is so close to the sun. Mercury also has no outer atmosphere so there probably be no life. I agree that the reasons of finding the ice and organic materials were astroids or comets hundreds of millions of years ago, but I think this is a great discovery. Overall, I very interesting article. A+
