This was a really thought-out idea. I probably would never figure out that you could make a fire using an orange. This was amazing because it says that you have to spin a stick on a rock in the orange to light it on fire. I haven't tried this, however I think this is very accurate and cool. Although it might be good to use in the woods it's a very dangerous thing to try if your not sure it works. It might even backfire so I wouldn't try it without knowing that it works or not.
I agree with Dylan. i would have never thought that a orange is flammable. Now I know to bring an orange when ever i go camping (just in case). The guy may be right that it is the acidic acid that caused this, but I would love to learn more about it.
Wow! This was really cool! I had no idea that oranges are flammable! I can't believe that an orange can be lit on fire with only a rock and a stick! I did not know that citric acid could possibly be used in starting a fire. I agree with Bianca about taking an orange with me to go camping, but do people always bring oranges to camping? So... If an orange is flammable, could a grapefruit or lemon be flammable as well? Or, could somebody use other highly acidic fruit to start fires? This was really interesting to know that a simple orange can save lives!
That was one of the coolest things I have ever seen. I agree with Dylan also. It is thought-out and I never would be able to think of this myself. If you were stuck in wild with only an orange before I saw this video I would probably just eat the orange. I really like this video and thank you Annie for finding this video.
Wow, this is amazing it is so cool that a orange can start a fire. This is a useful thin g to learn. The one problem is that if and orage was to react is some strage way that could cause a major fire or disaster. In conclusion this was a fun and cool video.
I think this was a really neat trick. I, like Dylan, would have never known that oranges were flammable, though I did know beforehand that most oils are flammable. I later learned the flammability of the orange comes from the orange oil in the skin. As the guy said, it should be used for only survival purposes, as it is possible to terrorize the population with orange bombs. All in all, this was a great discovery, but has a few downsides.
I completely agree with Dylan, but I also want to add on by saying that orange peels have oil in them so that might be the oil that is catching on fire and not the acid, but it might be both. There is a lot more that I want to find out about this like: Can this work with other things like a tomato, or other fruits, or even a tree? Would the tree bark act like the oil and burn, or would it not. I am going to look this up because I want to know a lot more. Not just because there is a small chance that I might get into this situation, but because the chemistry, or what makes the orange burn are things that I am interested in.
I agree with everyone above; this is extremely cool and useful if you are stuck in the wild. But, what are the odds that you will have even have an orange? And, if I were in the wild after watching this video, it might take me a while to get the fire going if it is a windy night, as the orange doesn't provide a very long fire anyways. Altogether, this is a great idea, but it has a lot of complications that could be involved. Another problem is the idea of an orange-bomb. If it really is that easy to set one up, who knows how many people will be using them in the next year or so? But, I do congratulate the person who figured out this idea, and the concept of using the citric acid as a flammable substance is an obvious thought, yet not discovered until recently. The thought of it is cool and very impressive, if I do say so myself, and could come in handy if you're stuck in the wild.
I thought this was amazing. It seems like a useful trick, but if it only lasts for 2 minutes, then your better off using the classic, rub tow sticks together, trick. I agree with everyone about the whole orange idea. How would you get the orange in the first place. I agree with Eva about the orange bomb. At the end of the video, they said that the orange idea was only if you need it for a good cause, but the idea of a flammable orange could get out of hand. They could use it as a weapon, or a bomb. Overall, I thought is was a great video.
Awesome. I know that it's just a campfire trick, but still it's very cool. I might try that at home if my mom lets me. I'm surprised that it's that simple to make fire with an orange. That's a really cool trick.
This video is really cool. I would have never thought an orange would be flammable. I did know the old trick when you rub the stick against the rock to make a fire. The orange in this video helps the fire be created quicker. I would love to try this trick. Now I always know to bring an orange if i go camping. It would be cool to find way that would make the fire last longer.
I agree with everyone above.... but it isn't that bad.... if you need something with just a little bit of light so that it doesn't disturb wild animals or anything, this would be the thing to do. Bombs are dangerous, but would one orange send a whole bomb flying into something? If we used more oranges then one, it still wouldn't last so long and the oranges would move around and shake to make the fire go out. I agree with Eva on how it would be difficult to light it on a windy night, but like Rachel said, it is not only used for lighting a fire, but keeping a fire up... it could help make the fire stay longer also and like Matthew said, you could probably do it with some other fruit or vegetable. The odds are small that you would have an orange with you, but it would probably work with other things. Also, this video is not saying you HAVE to use an orange to light a fire, you can use a stick and a rock and do it the old fashion way, it is just pretty cool.
I thought that this was really cool, but what are the odds of you getting lost and having an orange and a knife with you? Also, do you think that with all of this new technology, we wouldn't just try to find a place to call somebody? It might be cool if you were in the Hunger Games and for some reason part of your survival pack was an orange and you caught the knife that Clove tried to kill you with and you set a fire but the Careers didn't find you...then it would work. But other wise, the trick is really just pointless. You could only use just to show people.
Overall, I thought that this was pretty cool, but it really isn't something you need to practice in order to survive.
I do not think that this was possible. Making a fire with an orange just does not seem right. And Alyssa, it probably will not save lives when people are camping because it only lasts a few minutes. Also, people could use this to do really bad things. Just think, an orange, a rock, and a stick does not sound so threatening. And for everyone who is saying that how can this simple flame start a big mess, that is false. In a supermarket, someone could place that orange anywhere, and you have a major catastrophe. But I will say that this is a very good idea!
I thought this was really cool. I would have never guessed that an orange could start a fire and save my life (if I was alone in the wilderness, of course). I think this trick could be really beneficial if you had to use it in real life.
Wow! I really didn't know that oranges could start a fire, and it looks really simple! I just think that it could be pretty dangerous because, like Dylan said, if you don't know what you're doing, you can end up making a very big mistake. I think that the orange can be turned into fire because it is very acidic. I wonder if you can light a fire with any other random object.
Overall, I think that this is really interesting, but I need more information so I can judge it well.
That's a pretty neat trick for staying alive in the wild, but it would only work if whoever in the wild is very close to some sort of citrus fruit tree. And for everyone that said that this trick can cause lots of catastrophe: so can many other objects in the world. You could make that same argument with a lighter or a match. It's like saying that a shoe or a pencil is very dangerous if you light it on fire. Of course it is. It's on fire. An orange, rock, and stick aren't particularly dangerous: the fire only lasts a few minutes and it is very small. I think the trick is very useful and not very dangerous.
Orangeriffic! I know now that whenever I go camping, I should bring an orange. But, my dad said that oranges don't burn, so I would really like someone to do more scientific research on it. Exactly how does it work? What about starting a fire with Mountain Dew? How many times does it work or backfire? This needs a lot more information before I would try it, unless it was desperate.
This is a really good idea and it could be VERY useful to hikers or hunters. I never would have thought that an orange could be this affective. Is the orange the only acidic fruit that this can work with? I would like to try this sometime! I think that the next time I go outdoors, I will bring an orange with me, just in case. I think that this was a very creative idea, and it is very cool.
I really think this video can save a camper or hiker that needs help or needs to signal something. The person in the video explained a little bit of the science, like how the citric acids help the orange in the process of starting a fire. Also the fact that the orange has a nice shape to hold on to so it makes the perfect fruit. And you could probably use a different fruit but it might take longer because the orange is very acidic if compared to other fruits.
SO COOL!!! I never something like an orange can be a survival guide to people. The guy was saying that the acid was flammable and I think so to. Only a rock, a stick, and an orange can make a fire? I was reading the comments on the video, and people keep saying that it's fake and he rigged it. The truth it that if he rigged it, he would have wanted to be a huge fire. I totally think that this is real.
I think it was an outside-the-box idea to do this. It seems interesting. I wonder if since you can light an orange on fire could you light a lemon. It would be cool to try. I would try this at home, but I think that my parents would get mad at me. If you wanted to create a bigger fire, is the point that you could just stick some sticks in it and light them on fire and then light other sticks and on and on and on until you have a big fire? There is one main thing that bothers me. What if some of the citric acid (which he said was the flammable) squirted into the air and caught fire. Wouldn't it light the ground around it on fire. That is my only problem.
All in all, I think it is a good idea though there are a few things that would need to be cleared up. Also I might try this at home, though I think that I would have to do it secretly.
WHOA!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! ORANGES ARE FLAMMABLE?!?!?!?!?!?!? I could have never guessed that, of all fruits, ORANGES are flammable! I think it's amazing that if you have only an orange in the woods then you could survive. But there would be a few setbacks to that. As he mentioned, it only lasts for a little bit and it may be harmful. I thought that this video was great! Thanks! P.S. Loved his cowboys t-shirt and walmart reference.
This was a very interesting video. I had no idea that oranges were flammable. What puzzles me is how Mountain Dew is flammable. The guy from the video briefly said that, and that puzzled me because it is a soda. How can liquid turn into a fire? That should put a fire out, well unless it's gasoline of course. But Mt. Dew. The most unhealthy and disgusting soda on earth can be lit on fire. That is strange. I think that it is weird that the person was able to light the orange on fire in like 5 seconds. I thought it would take at least a minute or two. When he said that it could help you for about two minutes. What type of thing is that? What happens if you need it for hours? Not good. Funny video, but not useful.
Wow that was amazing now I know how to servive in the wild with only an Orange! So I get lost in the woods with an Orange, I eat the orange inside, then make a FIRE! thats amazing. Pretty Useful Orange don't you think?
I thought this was a really good idea. The fact that you can light a fire with an orange is very useful. I think that you could use this with other fruits too. I knew that you could use a rock and a stick or a rock and metal to light a fire, but i never knew that you could use and orange as a really good fuel.
