Trunk In Cheek, Elephant Mimics Korean

Brought to by: Emilynne

An Asian elephant named Koshik in a South Korean zoo has managed to mimic the sounds of human words, though there is no evidence he uses the sounds with any grasp of what they mean.

I think that it is amazing that so many animals are learning to mimic humans. I wonder if they actually know what they are saying.

WOW. I didn't know that animals could do that. I also wonder if they know what they are saying. I hope the experiments continue. It is very interesting that the elephant mimics the Korean language. I think it is very smart to play recordings of 16 Korean speakers. It is very interesting that the elephant can mostly speak vowels and not consonants. It is very interesting that they try to speak Korean.

wow. I think it is amazing that animals could mimic humans. I agree with Kylan and Josh, and I am also curious to find out if they now what they are saying. I think that similar to a baby learning how to speak, it listens to the words that it is surrounded by and then tries to copy them. For a baby what usually turns out is WAAAAH or something like that until they grow up, but I find it really interesting that the animals learn so fast.

Because these animals have learned to comunicate with humans in foreign languages, it will be a lot easier to find out what they are thinking, or find out about the unknown life that animals live in. We now know what certain animals are capable of, and from here, we can use this knowledge for many more things. This was really cool for me because even for me being fluent in Korean, I still have trouble pronouncing several words, I am amazed that this elephant can speak Korean-- even if it is just a few words.

I completely agree with Josh. Interesting article. I wonder why they use Korean as the language that elephants talk. Quite an unusual language. Cool!

This was such a cool video! Corey, to explain the answer to your question... The elephant is speaking Korean because he is IN South Korea in the zoo. The people speak Korean there. Anyway, the article it self is well-written and informative. I loved how the elephant learned how to do that. Especially, with its trunk! It can't get much cooler than that! Overall, this article including the video deserves an A!

This is cool, but I am skeptical. Sorry everyone, but he obviously does not know what he is saying. Since he is in South Korea, people say that a lot. He has heard it, but how can he know that. And the fact that he can do it in his cheek may be the only way he can do it. The sound is a little muffled, not perfect. In my opinion I think that elephants can probably do this but they do not ask every elephant to mimic human sound. Overall I would call that cool but overrated.

This video is so cool! It is really unexpected. I would have never though an elephant could speak or mimic Korean. The article was very informative an very interesting. If every animal could speak language people can know what they saying and thinking.
