This is interesting that a bacteria eats poison and poops out gold, but the reason gold is worth a pretty penny is that it is rare. If these bacteria were to be kept in labs, and kept producing gold, then gold's value would be reduced. Therefore, I don't think that this is such a good thing. If it were to reduce gold's value, then there would be no point in continuing the process of using the bacteria. They would stop for a while, and then after the price had gone up again, they would repeat the process.

I agree with Weston about reducing gold's value when produced in labs because people wear gold as a precious metal, people don't pay a lot of money for steel or nickel. Also, when the bacteria eats the raw gold, it defeats the purpose because there is gold in the raw material, so all the bacteria does is eat gold, make it like gold people by, then slowly poop it out. Again, another thing. the raw stuff that the bacteria eats is found in the bottom of the ocean, so the amount of the material is very small. Overall, it was very interesting to discover a bacteria that is capable of eating a toxic material that usually kills most living organisms.

I think that it is strange that bacteria will consume poison and get rid of gold. It is also amazing that this poison is found at the bottom of the bottom of the ocean. I thought that the poison would be deadly to the bacteria. If the bacteria can only take so much then how long will it take them to die from it?

This is amazing. If we could just get these bacteria to somewhere where people were poor and unhealthy, this could cause people to be happy and not have to worry about financial problems. It could stop world poverty and health issues.

I think that this bacteria wouldn't be too bad. It could be used to help the environment. You could release it into the ocean where this toxic chemical has been seen. Then once they've ingested a bit, bring them up to the surface and wait. Once they've, you know, pooped, take the gold. But you would have to know a little more about what they eat, to make sure they didn't eat something else and mess up the ecosystem. I believe that people are concentrating to much on the gold, and not really thinking about what other uses this bacteria could have. I like the last sentence of the video: But it's nice to know that something out there is helping our environmental cause and making us a small profit in the process. It brings out what else this special bacteria can do and gets your thoughts off the gold. Also, if you did this, we would just have a little bit of gold, not enough to lower the cost.

I think that this experiment is really cool, but altogether, it wouldn't work. First of all, you need a gold substance to do this chemical process, and that could be expensive on its own, and then you need the actual chemicals used, which is hard to find and also expensive to buy and use. The bacteria needed is hazardous, which puts another twist in the situation. And, if the little gold nuggets it produces are so small and take so long to make, it could take months and even years to get enough gold for a big, solid necklace or even a bracelet. Eventually, people would run out of money and the resources needed for the experiment.

In my opinion, this is a good yet bad discovery, and should be used for as little a time period possible. Otherwise, the bacteria that is at the bottom of the ocean, with whatever need it has for the environment, will run out, as a natural resource, and not be able to be used again.

I know that this may seem like a giant important discovery on how mankind is going to suddenly become more wealthy than we already are. I mean think about this, in the grand scheme or things, is this really gonna make a difference? Us humans are smart enough to have found gold already, and even if we can't mass produce it, we should just except that gold isn't going to become as popular as McDonalds our of the blew just because a little bateria is slowly pooping out our precious metal. Like Alyssa said, this bacteria is found at the bottom of the ocean. We would have to be constantly going down and bringing this stuff back up. An then, to top that off, the bacteria we are bringing up from thousands of feet underwater, is toxic. I honestly don't think that this experiment is going to be anymore successful, or probably less successful than when somebody came up with idea to put a very small amount of gold into little glass canister and sell these canisters at Sacramento to the tourists. And, we would also be aware that this would have been a bigger deal and that it was worth telling the world about and actually using the experiment to our own benefits. Like I said before, some people just have crazy minds and they and everybody needs to except the fact that you will never be able to buy gold at a gas station in the ghost town of Calico on your way to Vegas from Los Angeles.

Overall, I enjoyed this article reading wise, but the information seems like it might waste out time.

I think this is a very interesting that there is a specific bacteria that is so much more resistant to this poison then others. The toxin is made with gold, so I think that scientists should figure out if we can get more gold by the bacteria eating the toxin or dissecting the gold from the toxin. I also believe that if we could salvage all of the this toxin than we could produce gold in mass amounts. And Weston, while gold's value would be reduced, gold is worth so much that if the price is reduced it would still be valuable. Overall, I believe that this was an interesting article and this could be a very useful discovery.

Personally, I don't think this is a very useful way of getting gold, although I found the article very interesting. The gold comes out in tiny particles, and the poison is only found in the bottom of the ocean and is a very small amount. I also agree with Alyssa that the bacteria doesn't just conjure up gold in its intestines, it actually just eats gold and poops it out in nuggets.

I think that it is cool. People always think toxic as something bad but if you can turn it into a golden nugget then that is just awesome. It's funny how people keep on experimenting and coming up with new things. Overall, I think that it is very cool.

I think that every one is right. Gold is in that liquid. All the bacteria is doing is extracting the gold from the other substance and pooping it out. Also Alyssa is right in the fact that the liquid is only found in very small amounts so it would be hard to get. It was very cool that bacteria can digest a toxic liquid and extract to gold.

Wow, I mean Wow! This is so fascinating! Not once did it come to my mind that gold could be produced by bacteria. As amazing as this is, it just is not practical. It is cool but how could somebody just wait around for the bacteria to poop out gold. You could never sell it. I agree with Izzy. It's not that we achieved something impossible, we just thought of a cool experiment. This will not really make a difference in our life. I think that scientists should maybe put this aside and make a cure for cancer and other horrible diseases.

Ok this is pretty cool. I mean you get and acid eating bacteria to produce tiny gold nuggets. That is pretty cool. But this is the time for my science brain to speak so here it is. First thing is do you think that the fact that the toxic bacteria eats toxic poison to produce gold but what if the gold is dangerous. Not dangerous to the touch but I don't know it's just an inkling I have. But still we shouldn't get our hopes up the gold particules are too tiny and the bacteria is hard to get but then again it did say they eat the toxic 25 more times than any other bacteria so that may produce more gold nuggets. And adding to why we shouldn't do this type of thing is it is also expensive and dangerous. I mean having people around dangerous chemicals that are fed to a toxic bacteria? And the nuggets that are made should go to the poor and needy not to science research stuff and made to make necklaces like Jahan said. But in my opinion this it too dangerous to produce and I am not a risk taker.

That was an interesting article. I think that even though the toxic liquid may be incredible because it "creates" gold, it takes gold to make gold. I think the most useful part of this idea is to use the toxic waste and eliminate some portion of it from our earth. This idea seems more like a foundation for other better improved ideas with the same concept, kind of like the invisibility cloak prototype. Scientists could take the idea and improve it, but the original idea and discovery came from this toxic liquid. I also agree with many other comments: if scientists did take the idea and improve it to create more gold than the toxic liquid eats, the idea would keep improving over time and gold would become less precious over time. Maybe the improvements would get to the point where people could create large amounts of gold with normal household items, and then gold would be practically worthless. Overall, the idea is cool, but there are downsides to it.

I was blown away with the fact that bacteria can turn toxic liquid into pure gold. As amazing as it is, I see a bad side to this as much as I see the good side.

Bad side- In the video they said that the toxic liquid can kill any living beings. I know that nobody would be foolish enough to eat it, but wouldn't there still be poison in the gold and could it react badly? Plus, not only the gold is famous, but so is the toxic liquid. If to many people by the toxic liquid, wouldn't that be dangerous for people?

Good side- The way I understood it, the gold helped the environment. Technically, this discovery hits two birds with one stone! Not only does this discovery help the environment, at the very same time it is gold! I mean who doesn't like gold?

I think that this is really amazing, but the bad side worries me a little.
